A Veteran's Commitment: How Nigel Found Purpose in St John Ambulance

With a background in the Air Force, experience in first aid, and a passion for helping others, Nigel’s story is a great example of how St John can offer both personal growth and the chance to give back to the community.
A Career of Service
Nigel’s professional career spans over 33 years in the Air Force. Starting as an avionics technician working on F-18s, then as Air Traffic Controller, and now as an Air Traffic Control Instructor, he now works as a Development Officer and creates simulation scenarios for training. Despite the demands of his full-time career, Nigel’s desire to help others has remained continuous.
“I’ve always had an interest in first aid,” Nigel shares. “Even back when I was 14, I took a first aid course with my mother. That sparked my interest in life-saving skills, and I’ve built on that through advanced courses and my work in the Air Force.”
A Family Affair
Nigel’s path to becoming a volunteer with St John began with his wife Kerrie, who is also deeply involved in the field. Both of them are trainers for Life Saving Victoria, specialising in pool lifeguards, CPR, first aid, and other courses. It was her enthusiasm that inspired Nigel to get involved.
“My wife heard about St John’s recruitment program and did the online information session,” Nigel explains. “She had already done her certificate 2 in Medical Service First Response, and when she saw the opportunity, she got really excited about it.” The following day, she convinced me to also do it and I thought, ‘Why not?’ and I attended the following one the next night.”
Fast-Tracked Training and Real-World Experience
Nigel and his wife quickly got involved with St John, completing their training in record time. “We were fast-tracked through training, which we finished by January and our graduation was February the 16th,” Nigel recalls. “In amongst our training, we also spent three days in Melbourne doing observation shifts at different events.
While the observation events provided valuable hands-on experience, nothing could prepare Nigel for his next volunteer role at one of St John’s most prestigious events. “I was overwhelmed at first, but I learnt so much,” he says. “It was a real test of the training we had received, but it was so rewarding to know I could rely on my skills when needed.”
The Importance of Giving Back
Nigel’s experience with St John has been far more than just learning first aid. It’s been about making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
“Helping people, especially when they’re in distress, is incredibly fulfilling,” he says. “It’s about being part of something bigger, and the skills you develop help you grow personally while contributing to the community.”
First Aid: More Than Just a Skill
For Nigel, first aid training isn’t just about learning techniques; it’s about being prepared to help in any situation. Having undergone combat first aid training prior to his time in Afghanistan, he is no stranger to high-pressure situations.
“In the Defence Force, we’re trained to handle first aid under stressful conditions,” he explains. “Whether it’s administering tourniquets, CPR, or other life-saving measures, we are prepared to act quickly, even when we’re under fire.”
This experience has only deepened his appreciation for the life-saving skills taught by St John. “I’ve always been drawn to first aid, and St John offers a chance to expand that knowledge in a practical, hands-on way.”
A Call for More Volunteers
St John’s Wellington Division is actively recruiting new members, and Nigel’s story is a powerful example of the difference volunteers can make. “The team at Wellington is aging, and without new volunteers, the division could struggle,” he says. “It’s crucial that more people get involved.”
Despite his full-time career and personal commitments, Nigel is dedicated to continuing his volunteer work with St John. “I’m passionate about this cause, and if I can spare the time, I’m happy to help out.”
Is St John for You?
Nigel encourages anyone with an interest in first aid or helping others to consider volunteering with St John. “If you want to expand your skills, gain more confidence, and make a difference in your community, St John is an amazing opportunity, and the rewards are worth it.” he says.
