Finding Purpose on the Road: Shaq’s Journey with St John’s NEPT

From the moment you meet Shaq, it’s hard not to feel at ease.

With a calming voice, a big smile and an open, welcoming presence, he has a natural way of connecting with people, whether it’s colleagues, patients or their families. It’s this warmth, combined with a genuine desire to help others, that led him to St John Ambulance Victoria’s Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) team.

But his journey didn’t start there.

Shaq began his career in aged care, driven by a strong sense of purpose and a desire to support people in meaningful ways. Over time, he realised he wanted to challenge himself further, to grow his skills and make an even greater difference in the community.

“I got to a point where I needed to make a change,” he says. “Something where I could really make an impact.”

That turning point came when he was introduced to NEPT through another St John officer. Hearing firsthand what the role involved, and seeing the welcoming, supportive culture of the team, inspired him to take the leap.

“It was really enlightening. The crew were so warm and welcoming, and that’s what started me on this journey.”

No Two Days the Same

Working in NEPT means that every day begins with preparation and care.

For Shaq, that starts with vehicle and equipment checks, ensuring everything is ready to safely transport patients and deliver the best possible care. From there, the day unfolds in unpredictable and often deeply human ways.

“There’s a lot I learn day to day as I go,” he says.

A typical shift might involve meeting patients and their families, liaising with hospital staff, and supporting people through transitions in their healthcare journey. But no two days are ever quite the same.

“Every patient is different. You never know what to expect, so I go in with an open mind and the right attitude.”

The Power of Human Connection

What Shaq enjoys most about his role isn’t just the clinical responsibility; it’s the people.

“The stories,” he says simply.

Each patient brings a unique perspective, life experience and story to share. Being invited into those moments, often during vulnerable or significant times, is something Shaq doesn’t take lightly.

“It’s about being involved in a personal way while still being professional and providing the service they need.”

That same sense of connection extends to his colleagues. Working in NEPT means being part of a team that adapts to different situations every day, building camaraderie through shared experiences, challenges and moments of laughter.

“I’m not just grateful for one thing, it’s the whole experience,” he says. “The conversations you have with colleagues can be completely different depending on the day, and that’s what makes it so interesting.”

More Than a Job

For Shaq, working at St John is more than just a career, it’s a source of pride and personal growth.

“What motivates me is knowing I work for such a recognisable organisation, with such an interesting history, and that I’m contributing to the community,” he says. “It’s really rewarding and helps me grow as a person.”

Like many people considering a career change, Shaq admits he was nervous at first.

“I was definitely hesitant to take that leap of faith, he says. “But it ended up being the best decision I’ve ever made.”

That hesitation quickly gave way to confidence, supported by a team and environment that exceeded his expectations.

“Everyone is so helpful, and the environment is more than you could expect.”

Taking the First Step

For anyone considering a career with St John’s NEPT team, Shaq’s message is simple:

“You have nothing to lose by helping others and being part of the community in a meaningful way.”

It’s a sentiment that reflects not just his journey, but the heart of NEPT itself; a service built on compassion, professionalism and human connection.

And if you ever find yourself on a shift with Shaq, you will likely be greeted with that signature smile, and maybe even a big hug, reminding you that sometimes, the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference.
