2026 First Aid Champion Awards Overall Winner and CPR First Aid Champion

For Karen and Rodney McDowell, life is found in the little moments.

It's spending time with their three grown-up children. It's watching their grandchildren explore the walking tracks and nature reserve near their home. It's sharing everyday conversations over coffee or a morning stroll, enjoying each other's company after three decades together, as husband and wife, and looking forward to making more memories as a family.

But one ordinary day late November last year, all of that was almost taken away.

What began as a normal afternoon at home quickly turned into a fight for life.

Shortly after finishing a workout on his exercise bike, Rodney suddenly collapsed. He had suffered a cardiac arrest. Within moments, he was unconscious.

Hearing a faint noise, Karen rushed to her husband's side thinking he had fallen and hit his head, but she was confronted with every spouse's worst nightmare. Rolling him on his back and noticing that there was no response, she realised that the situation was more serious than she thought, and there was no time to waste.

“I was sitting by his side while he was exercising; then I went to the bedroom to get my drink bottle when suddenly I heard a noise; it was only a faint noise, but it was there and I was wondering what it was, so I went and asked him if he was ok, and he didn’t respond.” Karen explains.

She immediately called Triple Zero (000) and, guided by the call taker, began performing CPR.

“I still did not know he had a heart attack that day; as I started performing CPR, it started sinking because you don’t think they are going to make it.” Karen continues.

As the minutes stretched on, Karen refused to give up. With every compression, she fought for the man she loved. “You are not going to die on me today.” She remembers saying it out loud, as she performed CPR. For a moment, she thought she had lost him until a neighbour alerted through the GoodSAM app arrived to help, providing critical support until paramedics reached the scene.

It had taken more than 40 minutes of CPR and six to seven defibrillator shocks before his heartbeat could be restored. The outlook was grim. Together, they continued resuscitation efforts before Rodney was transported to hospital.

After receiving initial care at a regional hospital, Rodney was transferred to the Victorian Heart Hospital for surgery. Doctors later told the family Rodney had only a two per cent chance of survival, as he had one of his major arteries completely blocked, and surviving that ordeal was a miracle. Yet somehow, against overwhelming odds, he survived.

Today, Rodney has made a full recovery and is back at work full-time.

When asked about what happened that day, Karen is quick to downplay her role. “A hero, that’s pretty cool.” She speaks. “I don’t know why you’re thanking me and congratulating me, because I didn’t feel like I did anything.”

But Rodney won't hear of it. To him, there is no question who the hero is. “I’d like Karen to know that I’m just so proud of her.”

“I am very humble of what’s she done to save my life and she should be extremely proud of herself”

Without Karen's courage, determination and willingness to act in those critical first moments, he believes he would not be alive today.

"She saved my life," he says simply.

The gratitude in his voice is impossible to miss.

Even now, their bond remains as strong as ever. Rodney describes Karen as his hero and says he cannot imagine life without her. Friends and family who know the couple speak of a deep and enduring love, one that has only grown stronger through the challenges they have faced together.

While Karen's actions demonstrate the lifesaving importance of CPR, at its heart this is a story about love.

In a moment of unimaginable fear, Karen relied on her instincts, her courage and her determination to keep going. She didn't know what the outcome would be. She only knew that the person lying before her was her husband, her partner in life, the father of their children and grandfather to their adored grandchildren.

And she wasn't ready to let him go. Because of Karen's actions, Rodney was given the greatest gift possible: a second chance at life. A second chance to watch his grandchildren grow, a second chance to enjoy family walks through the reserve, a second chance to make new memories with the people he loves most.

As the Overall Winner of the 2026 First Aid Champion Awards, Karen's story is a powerful reminder that anyone can save a life when they are willing to act.

She may not see herself as a hero, but to Rodney, their children, their grandchildren and everyone who has heard their story, she will always be exactly that.

As part of her award, Karen has taken home a brand-new St John Pocket AED to donate to an organisation of her choice, helping to ensure more people have access to lifesaving equipment when every second counts.

And while awards and recognition are certainly deserved, Karen's greatest reward is much simpler: it's having Rodney beside her. Still here, still smiling, still sharing the little moments that mean everything.
